After the cocktail hour came to an end, Ava and I headed to our seats for the dinner. Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia, the co-creative directors of Oscar de la Renta, presided over the Ceremony for Outstanding Masks; Jordan Roth, Andy Yu and Lisa Sher-Chambers won the three prizes. It was an incredibly glamorous evening, and in the midst of the festivities, I caught up with Ava on what she’s up to right now.

Another reason for getting gussied up? The mask competition. Oscar de la Renta’s creative directors Laura Kim and Fernando Garcia presided over the Ceremony for Outstanding Masks. Jordan Roth was applauded for his ingenuity, winning “most creative”; Andy Yu was hailed as the epitome of Italian flair, winning “most Venetian” mask; and Lisa Sher-Chambers embodied the essence of the night best and took home the “most en theme” award. Upon walking up to claim his win, Garcia jokingly asked Roth for a few words. “I didn’t know a speech was required,” Roth purred to the audience. “Does my mask not speak for itself?”

During cocktail hour, swans and blackbirds immersed themselves into the Venetian Garden created by Save Venice co-chair Bronson van Wyck and his team at Van Wyck & Van Wyck, There were trees, flowers, and foliage adorning the Terrace Room and Grand Ballroom that were meant to depict the Veronese's paintings in the Church of San Sebastiano. In between the decor were the tall and glittering masks. The accessories, originally conceived to conceal identities, were commodified to draw attention to wearers and draw in compliments of all sorts. The designer Bach Mai wore a mask that was probably 2 1/2 half feet tall. In the end, it was Jordan Roth, Lisa Sher-Chambers, and Andy Yu who won prizes for their masks.

The big show, as the finale of the evening's event, received unanimous praise from the guests present.
